Soil-moisture limits on plant uptake: An upscaled relationship for water-limited ecosystems

چکیده

Transpiration in water-limited ecosystems is controlled by the availability of soil moisture. Rain events in these natural environments may only partially wet the root zone, leading to a heterogeneous distribution of available water. This spatial variability coupled with the non-linearity of the function relating local uptake to local saturation produces a non-unique relationship when these quantities are scaled up. This work proposes a simple multi-valued relationship between plant transpiration and average root-zone saturation predicated on the distinct spatial patterns of wetting and drying. Predictions of daily transpiration from an upscaled model that uses this relationship match closely those from a vertically resolved model that employs an Ohm s law analogy for plant uptake. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of vertical resolution on predictions of transpiration in water-limited ecosystems

Water-limited ecosystems are characterized by precipitation with low annual totals and significant temporal variability, transpiration that is limited by soil-moisture availability, and infiltration events that may only partially rewet the vegetation root zone. Average transpiration in such environments is controlled by precipitation, and accurate predictions of vegetation health require adequa...

Elevated CO2 and warming effects on CH4 uptake in a semiarid grassland below optimum soil moisture

[1] Semiarid rangelands are a significant global sink for methane (CH4), but this sink strength may be altered by climate change. Methane uptake is sensitive to soil moisture showing a hump‐shaped relationship with a distinct optimum soil moisture level. Both CO2 and temperature affect soil moisture, but the direction of CH4 uptake response may depend on if the system is below or above the soil...

Ecohydrology of groundwater-dependent ecosystems: 2. Stochastic soil moisture dynamics

[1] In groundwater-dependent ecosystems, interactions between rainfall, water table fluctuations, and vegetation are exerted through the soil water content. The dynamics of soil moisture, in fact, are strongly coupled to fluctuations of the water table and, together, they control the overall ecosystem dynamics. We propose here a simple process-based stochastic model for the study of soil moistu...

Evapotranspiration: a Process Driving Mass Transport and Energy Exchange in the Soil-plant-atmosphere-climate System

[1] The role of evapotranspiration (ET) in the global, continental, regional, and local water cycles is reviewed. Elevated atmospheric CO2, air temperature, vapor pressure deficit (D), turbulent transport, radiative transfer, and reduced soil moisture all impact biotic and abiotic processes controlling ET that must be extrapolated to large scales. Suggesting a blueprint to achieve this link is ...

Inference of Soil Hydrologic Parameters from Electronic Soil Moisture Records

• Soil hydrologic parameters including field saturation, field capacity, initiation of plant water stress and plant extraction limits can be reliably determined from electronic soil moisture sensor records. • Soil profile wetting and drying occurs along a regular continuum of soil moisture following the advance of the wetting from to the effective base of the soil profile. • Frozen soil conditi...
